What is Root Canal Treatment?

Understanding Root Canal Treatment: Causes, Symptoms, and What to Expect

When severe tooth decay reaches the inner pulp of a tooth, it can cause significant discomfort and compromise the tooth’s structure. In the past, a severely infected tooth often had to be extracted. Today, root canal treatment (endodontic therapy) provides a reliable way to clean the infection, alleviate pain, and save your natural tooth.

Here is an overview of what root canal treatment involves, the signs that you might need one, and how modern dental technology assists in the process.

To understand the procedure, it helps to know the clinical terminology.

Root Canal Treatment is “A clinical dental procedure performed to save a structurally damaged or infected tooth by carefully removing the diseased inner tissue, thoroughly sanitizing the hollow chamber, and hermetically sealing it to prevent future bacterial infection.”

A tooth is made up of a hard outer layer (enamel), a softer inner layer (dentin), and a soft tissue center known as the pulp. The pulp contains nerves, blood vessels, and connective tissue. When this pulp becomes infected or inflamed—often due to deep decay, repeated dental procedures on the tooth, or a crack or chip—it needs to be carefully removed to prevent the infection from spreading to the surrounding bone.

During a root canal, the dentist removes the infected pulp, cleans and shapes the inside of the root canal, and then fills and seals the space.

Common Signs You May Need a Root Canal

The symptoms of an infected tooth can vary, but common indicators include:

  • Severe Toothache: Persistent, throbbing pain, especially when chewing or applying pressure.
  • Prolonged Sensitivity: Pain from hot or cold temperatures that lingers long after the source has been removed.
  • Swelling and Tenderness: Swollen or tender gums near the affected tooth.
  • Tooth Discoloration: The tooth may begin to darken or turn a grayish-black hue.
  • A Pimple on the Gums: A small, persistent bump on the gums near the tooth, which may ooze pus.

Note: Sometimes, an infected tooth may present no symptoms at all. Regular dental check-ups and X-rays are essential for early detection.

The Role of Digital Dentistry in Endodontics

Advancements in dental technology have significantly improved the precision of endodontic procedures. At Meiplus Dentalcare, our approach incorporates Korean Digital Dentistry to assist in diagnosis and treatment planning. High-resolution 3D imaging and digital X-rays allow our dental team to visualize the complex anatomy of your root canals with clarity. This precise imaging aids in thoroughly cleaning the infected areas and accurately shaping the tooth for its final restoration.
