Paediatric dentistry is the branch of dentistry focused on the oral health of children from infancy through adolescence. It covers preventive care, restorative treatments, and behavioural management to ensure children develop healthy dental habits from an early age.
Baby teeth play several important roles beyond chewing. They hold space in the jaw for permanent teeth, support clear speech development, and contribute to a child’s facial structure. Losing baby teeth too early due to decay or injury can cause permanent teeth to come in crooked or misaligned, potentially requiring orthodontic treatment later.
Common dental issues in children include early childhood tooth decay (often called baby bottle tooth decay), gum inflammation, teeth grinding, thumb-sucking habits affecting bite alignment, and delayed or irregular eruption of teeth. Regular dental visits help identify and address these issues early.
When a baby tooth is lost prematurely, neighbouring teeth can drift into the empty space, reducing the room available for the permanent tooth to erupt correctly. This can lead to crowding, misalignment, and the need for orthodontic intervention. In some cases, a space maintainer may be recommended to preserve the gap until the permanent tooth is ready to emerge.
Our children’s dental services include regular check-ups and oral health assessments, dental sealants to protect molar surfaces from decay, topical fluoride treatments to strengthen tooth enamel, tooth decay treatment and fillings, and orthodontic assessments for children who may benefit from early intervention.
Yes. Meiplus Dentalcare is a CHAS-accredited clinic. Singapore Citizen children from eligible households can use CHAS subsidies for covered dental procedures including consultations, fillings, scaling and polishing, and extractions. Parents should present their child’s CHAS card at registration to enjoy applicable subsidies.
It helps to talk positively about the dentist visit beforehand and avoid using words like “pain” or “injection.” Bringing a favourite toy for comfort, arriving early so your child can get familiar with the environment, and staying calm yourself can all help make the experience more relaxed. Our team is experienced in making children feel at ease before and during treatment.
Dental care should begin even before the first tooth appears — parents can gently wipe the gums with a clean, damp cloth. Once the first tooth erupts, use a soft infant toothbrush with a small smear of fluoride toothpaste. By age 3, a pea-sized amount of toothpaste is appropriate. Children typically need assistance with brushing until around age 7 to 8, when they develop sufficient motor skills to brush effectively on their own.
